About 60 students of the Enugu State University of Science
and Technology (ESUT) escaped death by the whiskers yesterday, July 24,
when a mysterious fire engulfed the Coal City Shuttle bus they were in.
The bus belonging to Enugu State Ministry of Transport was said to be conveying the students from the permanent site of the institution in Agbani, Nkanu West council to institution’s temporary site.
Though no live was lost in the incident which occurred at about 2.00pm near the Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS) junction, valuables including Laptops and handsets belonging to the students were completely destroyed.

According to one of the victims, Miss Ebere Okechi, a Computer Science student of the ESUT, the fire was discovered by
people outside the vehicle who were shouting fire, fire and they started jumping out from the bus.
Eyewitnesses, who spoke to Vanguard, said many of the other passengers sustained serious injuries while escaping through the widows and other exit available spaces in the bus.
The Enugu State Fire Service arrived the scene swiftly and succeeded in preventing the fire from spreading though, the fire destroyed almost all the vital parts of the bus and valuables of passengers.
Speaking on the incident, the coordinator of the Coal City Shuttle Bus, Nnaemeka Ojibe dismissed insinuations that the shuttle buses were not well maintained, saying, they are adequately taken care of and the bus which caught fire had a faulty battery.
