Face your Book, leave Facebook,FUNAAB VC warns students

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Prof. Olusola Oyewole, has warned students against wasting their time on Facebook, a social network on the Internet at the expense of their studies.

Speaking at a Role Modeling Lecture for the Girl-Child, sponsored by African Women in Agricultural Research and Development and organised by a Ph.D student and 2010 Award Fellow, Mrs. Bolanle Ogunlolu-Akinyemi, Oyewole charged FUNAAB students to sustain the institution’s legacy of excellence by doing more of studying than browsing the Internet.

“Facebook and other social networks are good but I will advise you to leave Facebook and face your studies,” he said.

The VC, who was represented by the former Head of Department of General Studies and Communication, Prof. Bolanle Akeredolu-Ale, said though internet was good for researches and knowledge acquisition, students should stop spending valuable time on the Facebook and other social networks.

Also, Ogunlolu-Akinyemi emphasised the need for female students to value time because it was greater than money.

She charged the students to compile a “not to do list,” adding that they should also desist from procrastination.

“You know yourself more than anyone else, so desist from comparing yourselves with others,” she noted.

She advised the students to learn how to say no politely and constructively, stressing that they should judge each day by the seeds sown and not by the harvest reaped.

Also, the FUNAAB’s Counsellor, Mrs. Modesta Ofodile, stated that students should use some of their free periods as private study time.

According to her, such free periods could also be utilised by the students to refresh and also renew their energy.

Ofodile asserted that it was an abomination for students not to revise the day’s lecture notes before going to the next class, adding that serious-minded students rarely get into trouble.

She, however, advised the students to manage their time, saying that “if you waste your time thinking there is time, examinations will catch you unawares.”

In her lecture, the Head of Department, Food Service and Tourism, Dr. A.M Omemu, informed the students of the availability of scholarship opportunities that they could benefit from if they so desired.

She charged them to check updates and information on these scholarships, through constant check on the Student Affairs Notice Board as well as on the Internet.
